Scholastic Book Order

In the hopes that we will receive our order before Winter Holiday, we will have a very short turnaround time with the December book order. (Please note, I cannot guarantee that our order will be here before the break, but we will keep our fingers crossed!)

Order forms are going home today. If you would like to order anything from Scholastic, please do so by this Thursday December 13, 2018.

As a reminder, you can order online by going to scholastic.ca/canadaclubs then clicking "Connect to a Teacher" and searching for our school and my name.

Happy Reading! :)

QSP - Order Pick Up

As a final reminder, we wanted to share with everyone that that frozen items ordered from QSP will be available for pickup this Wednesday.  For those families who ordered cookie dough or frozen treats from QSP, we would kindly ask that you please come to the school on Wednesday December 12th between 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. to pick up your orders.
All packages will be labeled and ready to be picked up from the front table in the foyer.  We would ask that all items be picked up on that day as we do not have storage facilities for frozen items.
Our continued thanks for your support of the school.

Today's Math Mania...

Today for Math Mania we tried our skills at Problem Solving! We have not taken up this question as a class, but we will do that on Monday. In the meantime, in case you are wondering how to help your child here are a few possible solutions to this question:

Information we know from the question:
- 24 students were surveyed
- Only SOME results are shown in the pictograph already
- The number of students who chose "cheese" as their favourite snack are missing
- The key tells us that each happy face represents 2 students, so we know that 1 student will be represented by half of a happy face

What we can figure out:
- 8 students like apples (2+2+2+2 = 8)
- 5 students like carrots (2+2+1 = 5)
- 4 students like crackers (2+2 = 4)
- 17 students have been surveyed so far (8+5+4 = 17)
- If 24 students were surveyed in total, the results of 7 students have not been shown in the pictograph (24 - 17 = 7)
- The 7 missing students like cheese. They can be represented by 3 1/2 happy faces.

There are many other ways students solved this problem in class. Here are some statements students told me when I asked how they solved the problem:

- "I counted by 2s and got to 17 so I kept adding happy faces and counting by 2s until I got to 24"

- "24 students in total will need to be represented by 12 happy faces. So far there are only 8 and a half, so I need 3 and a half more. All of those will need to be 'cheese'. Those 3 and a half happy faces are 7 students"

New Routine - Math Mania

We are beginning a new "at home" routine with our Math Mania today:

As you know, we begin each day of Math class with math drills that we like to call Math Mania!

Our current routine is that students bring home their folders if they are not finished the daily work. (The entire page is expected to be completed each day).

Beginning today, we will be taking home our Math Mania folders at least once throughout the week to have our answers checked at home by a parent, an older sibling, or a calculator!

ALL students will bring home their folders every Friday. In addition, throughout the week, I will ask several students to bring their work home to have it checked.

Students are aware of this new routine, and are excited to bring home their work and have you check it -- they like that their parents will have homework! :)

Students have also been told, and will be reminded, that if there are errors in their work they must fix those errors.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email me.

Thanks!

Spirit Day - Twin Day

Twin Day is only 1 week away!

On Wednesday December 12th we will have our second Spirit Day - Twin Day! Students can dress up as twins (or triplets!) with a friend. They can wear the same clothes, have the same hairstyle, or do anything else they choose to appear as "twins" for the day!

Hour of Code

Yesterday our class kicked off Computer Science Education Week with "The Hour of Code". We met up with our grade 5/6 reading buddies to further explore the MicroBits we were introduced to last week and practice our coding skills.

If you would like to try this at home with your child you can visit code.org or microbit.org to find an appropriate and engaging activity.

If students try something new at home, please encourage them to share it with us at school.

Happy Coding!

Toy Mountain

This holiday season, Bayview Glen P.S. is proud to be collecting toys to support Toy Mountain, a program in conjunction with CTV and the Salvation Army, which distributes gifts to children in need.  All you have to do is have your child drop off a new, unwrapped toy at school any time on or before December 12th 2018 and help build our Toy Mountain right in the school office!
As well, all families are invited on Wednesday, December 12th 2018 at 6:00 p.m. to the North York IKEA (15 Provost Drive) where our Toy Mountain will be donated, and where CTV Weather Anchor Tom Brown will broadcast the event live during CTV Toronto’s News at 6.  It would be nice to have a contingent of Bayview Glen P.S. students showing support and maybe we could even get on to the news broadcast, so we encourage our community to come out and join the celebration!  The broadcast will be outdoors, so if you’re attending, be sure to bundle up!
Help us build a mountain of good cheer for children in need this holiday season … one toy at a time!
